Poor Things
A Novel Guide
Want to find out more about the book behind Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Poor Things’ (2023) film? This movie is an interpretation of Alasdair Gray’s multi award-winning novel Poor Things (1992).
Poor Things is a Glaswegian novel inspired by the many people and places in the city. We commissioned this interactive resource in 2023 to provide audiences with an informative way of exploring the book. Throughout his working life Gray valued collaboration and sought to celebrate and declare his influences, seeing them as an integral part of all making. Poor Things: A Novel Guide shares these principles. The project was designed and edited by Rachel Loughran and features essays, videos, creative responses, podcasts and talks by a wide range of valued contributors – all Gray enthusiasts from a variety of disciplines. Their names and biographies can be found in Notes Critical and Biographical and we want to thank them all for their generous contribution. There are creative prompts too to allow teaching and aid your own creative interpretations of the text. So read on, but remember to be careful who to believe…
